New Hot Rod Cameras Press

Hello All,

We’ve had a couple nice bits of press recently. It’s always nice to read that people are really enjoying our products.

Also worth noting are the some new major projects shooting with the GH1 and Hot Rod systems- The GH1/Hot Rod combination has been working as B camera to both the Arri D21 and the Red camera on a major TV series and Feature Film. I’ll post a new page inside the ABOUT tab called WATCH US WORK as I have more information to share.

I.

It’s great to see all the nice press. I used to read the HUMAN TARGET comic, looking forward to the TV series about which I’ve heard mixed reviews. What are they using the HotRod rig and GH1 to shoot?

Heard from Brian V. about your panel together last week, among other things. (I hope you were kind ^_^.) Did they video it and will it be posted anywhere?

    Thanks and best wishes, Jamie

I don’t know if this DCS event was also taped. The panel was really well received and I was mobbed by people afterwards. Lot’s of good feedback from the event so far. Brian seems like a very nice fellow; in the few moments we had before the panel started we actually talked about you mostly.

We are using the Lumix GH1 / Hot Rod unit as a sort of “digital Eymo” . I’ve had our EFX guys’ machinists make a mount for it that braces the camera better than just the base screw and we have a crash box housing in the works. Human Target is a very action oriented series that has the aim of getting a first rate “action hero” back on TV. So far ( 2 episodes in) it’s going very well. Our A, B, and C cameras are all Arri D21’s. It premiers in January after the AFC conference final on FOX and then will air on the heels of American Idol thereafter so we all have high hopes for it. Right now I am playing with higher shutter speeds on action sequences to help it cut with the Arri’s which on action sequences we run at a 90 or 45 degree shutter. It’s portability and small size make it a treat to work with. Plus – it handles like an SLR so is very intuitive in using – unlike the un-ergonomic myriad digital “movie ” cameras out there. It’s compactness make it ideal for hiding in a shot too. The Hot Rod deluxe unit is very well balanced. It debuted today with one of my Cooke S4i’s on it to grab an extra angle of a window being blown out. Images and more to come as I get dailies back and assessments from editorial in LA.

I do have a question though. I run Mac. While Technicolor pulls the files for dailies, I am reduced to using Elgato Turbo to download to my computer as I don’t have Final Cut studio. Can someone tell me the easiest way to get the best quality downloaded without the supplied PC based software?

    Thanks.

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for a follow-up with all that great info! I’m really looking forward to seeing some images. I’ll follow up with an email shortly.

I’m not familiar with Elgato Turbo. I just want to understand exactly what you are trying to do with the footage, is this just for playback on-set? When working on REJOUER on a few occasions we did copy all the .MTS files to a thumb drive and pop it into a $299 PS3 and played back at 1080/59.94i via HDMI to an HD projector for dailies viewing. Obviously the pulldown is not removed, so motion cadence can appear a bit off, but the quality of the playback is superb.

I know the camera guys like having a PS3 and an HD monitor in the truck too, so I call the PS3 solution a win-win :-)

    Hi, Robert,

Thanks for the information! Looking forward to the show.

The Elgato Turbo looks like an excellent solution for fast conversion of AVCHD (and other formats) to H264 files for playback, if not as much fun during down-time as a PS3 (^_^). For better quality conversions, you might try Cineform to get to ProRes or the Cineform codec. I’ve been playing around with it for AVCHD files because of Illya’s mention of using it with Rejouer, and it seems to do a very good job with conversion and pulldown. And fast, too.

I have had issues when converting the color red, though. The edges of the color appear stairstepped, as if the wrong field order was used in the pulldown/de-interlace. I’ve had this same problem crop up with the color red using JES DEinterlacer to remove pulldown from footage shot with the HV20. Everything else looks very good.
